INTERVIEW & DOWNBEAT MINI MIX FOR -THISISBREAKS.COM-If there is a label around today that still maintains that original,
uncompromising nu skool breakbeat spirit, it would have to be Downbeat
Records. Label manager
Ceos gives thisisbreaks.com the lowdown on the east coast's top breaks label

Click here to download the mix from Ceos and ArceeWhat’s it all about then?Downbeat is a New York based label pushing the harder, more upfront
side of breakbeat. We came together as a label in the year 2000 with
the massive release of Backdraft's Headcharge. After that, we kept our
love for the bassline breaks alive with each and every single. The aim
of the label is to push the upfront heavy sound that we love. And yeah,
we’ve stayed true to our guns from the beginning. Besides running the
label, we’ve put together many weeklies and one offs all around the
north east.
Who’s involved?Rankin and I run the label. We have very similar tastes, so that makes
it very easy when picking out tunes to release. The label is mainly run
by a bunch of friends who have a love for music and art. I do all the
A&R work, DJ, promotions, write ups and artwork with my close
friend, Diego. Rankin is more behind the scenes doing the business side
of things and cooking up new ideas for the future. We also have a slew
of DJs pushing the sound of Downbeat worldwide, most noted in the
breaks scene would be Arcee, who is a wiz behind the decks.
Who’s the artist on the label who gives you hope that you might one day pay off that mortgage? We have many artists that keep Downbeat rolling, so to pick just one
wouldn’t be easy or fair. Sure, some stand out more than others, but
without all of them, Downbeat wouldn’t be what it is today.
On a scale of one to ten, how breaks are you? We’ve been breaks since the first release, so a 10 all the way.
If you could be one other label, who would it be and why?Wow! That’s a hard one. A few come to mind, but if I had to pick just
one it would be Botchit & Scarper. They were a huge influence on me
when I first got into breaks. Plus, I dare anyone to match their back
catalogue, it’s outstanding!
What are your plans for the future?Well, we just dropped Downbeat 020 Backdraft “The Headcharge Remixes”
which was rather special for us since the original version was our
first release. We have a lot of music on our plate already and aim to
completely devastate the scene with releases. Coming up we have singles
from D-Ranged, Suko, Dub Elements, Ribs & IG88, Dom Almond etc,
etc. Also, a six track EP from Wardian and a full on album of various
producers.
If you were not doing breaks, what style would you take on?Most likely downtempo and abstract beats type of stuff.
What’s your biggest pet hate, music wise?Cheese!!
