Citat :
One possible step for the future of goa/psytrance - this is psy'n'bass, or drum'n'trance, or breakgoa... anyway, its refreshing, its technically brilliant, its melodious, its hard, its kicking, its trancing - or simply put: GREAT STUFF! Nice goatrance riffs & melodies meet breakbeats and drum'n'bass drumsounds, or something. Its hard to put a description for this album in words; just one thing for sure - this won't get boring, even if you listen to it a dozen times. If you're into electronica, open minded, like good instrumentation, and not disturbed by drumtracks that are NOT 4-2-the-floor - you should really check out this release.

9 Squirt (6:15)
10 Goodnight Lover (7:34)

Citat :
Fluke's album is a sonic masterwork, a terrific balance of driving percussion, lush samples, emotional tempo, and controlled chaos. I could throw adjectives and superlatives at Risotto for page after page, but it is better summarized in a single statement: This is a necessary album if you are a fan of music.

The first two tracks (Absurd and Atom Bomb) are easily the most recognizable, since both have found prominent spots in commercial advertising and video game soundtracks. Both songs are dance floor explosions, giant-sounding and remixable to infinity, and always a welcome mat to join whatever party they are laying a soundtrack to. But the true power of Risotto lies afterwards, beginning at track three. For the next hour, Fluke transports you on a journey, never forcing the music upon you. The tracks roll smoothly, letting you discover the layers inside the songs for yourself. This is the kind of album which might not blow you away at first, but it will stick in your head, and make you want to hear it again and again. Amp and Reeferendrum steal the show in my ear, creating the apex of the journey, when the train begins to climb into outer space, where there are no limits on its direction. Music this good expands your mind, giving it room to grow and think, exposing you to how incredible this genre of music can truly be. It reminds me that the possibilities of digital music are boundless, and that is an exciting thought, indeed.

Citat :
This is the album that turned me on to breaks. I bought it essentially because of "History Repeating", and when I put the CD on and pressed "play", I fell in love with the rest of the album. While breakbeat is the dominant genre, each track has an identity all its own, and gets sprinkled by influences from other genres as well. Will White and Alex Gifford seem to have a lot of influences and to enjoy lots of different types of music. My only problem was that some of the tracks repeated the loops one too many times, as if I was expecting a new break to come in, but the overall result of the album is so good I don't care about those minor details. Thumbs up and heartily recommended.

This album is indeed the Orb’s finest hour and is as much of a pleasure to listen to today as it was 15 years ago. There is no doubt that of all the Orb’s other material, this album will continue to sustain its longevity for future generations of electronic music fans. The Orb perfectly blend dub, house, techno, trance and ambient in a uniquely designed psychedelic landscape that cannot be rivaled. Each of these songs start you off at your psychedelic abode, picks you up for a scenic car drive, drops you off at the club, raves you out, then takes you back home just in time for tea with Brian Eno.

Amazing acid noises, twisted samples, bouncing techno, nutty breaks... this album's just magical. It really is the kind of thing you'd imagine aliens to listen to while out cruising in their flying saucers. While they can certainly do the whole psytrance and acidy techno thing brilliantly, hypnotic downbeat tracks like 'Area 51' demonstrate their amazing skill with sounds and atmosphere. And the acidy gurgle noises - whooooah!

Citat :
Science Of The Gods (1997) is the third studio album by Eat Static. First two discs were Implant and Abduction, which had more organic, alien sounds. Science Of The Gods has sharper, darker techy sounds like from an alien spacecraft. First track starts with 4 minutes of breakbeats with flute and lots of metallic clangy sounds; then it is transformed into a simple but hard banging tech-trance, still with its spacey atmosphere. Interceptor(2) - dark drum & bass track, IMO better than tracks from common dnb artists. Kryll (3) is something that oscillates between dub and slow-breaks, very nice, chillin' & peaceful. Spawn (4) - dancefloor devastation Smile. Hear it. Dissection (5) jungle experiment, Pseudopod (6) is just an 1 minute bridge to another track (also jungle) called Bodystealers (7). This one has sharper frequencies than Dissection. Contact... trancers will love it. Hangar (9) - that's 14 minutes of experiments with sounds in slow breakbeat rhythm. Awesome end of this great album, which will take you through the galaxy of sounds.

Eat Static - Crash And Burn!

Label: Mesmobeat
Catalog#: mesmo cd3
Format: CD, Album
Country: UK
Released: 2000
Genre: Electronic
Style: Breaks, Latin, Experimental, Acid House, Techno, Psy-Trance

3 Holy War (8:53)
4 Dervish Funk (7:02)

6 Mondo A Go-Go! (5:06)
7 The Curious Dr. Hump (3:02)
8 Heaven Scent (8:16)
9 Elixir (7:27)

Citat :
British electronica gurus Eat Static bust out all over the place on their latest, Crash and Burn! Expanding far beyond their familiar techno/acid trance palette, Merv Pepler, Joie Hinton and Steve Everitt toss in heavy doses of Eastern exotica, spy movie soundtracks, Latin hip-shakers and even hip-hop turntablism in a self-proclaimed effort to create "a journey from the 14th to the 21st century, straddling generations of music". As you might expect, they fall short of so ambitious a goal, but never mind. Crash and Burn! is uneven at times, but overall it's a wildly entertaining disc, buoyed by some smart collaborations and a great sense of humor.

Fans of Eat Static's early techno jams might be surprised by how much Crash and Burn! leans toward space-age bachelor pad sounds, but anyone familiar with Pepler and Hinton's earlier work on Ozric Tentacles knows that these guys have always had strong influences outside the world of electronica. Loungecore rave-ups like the title track and the irresistibly groovy "Mondo a Go-Go!" (think Henry Mancini meets the B-52's) may be new territory for them, but that seems to be a good thing. These cuts bristle with more energy and originality than more conventional Eat Static tracks like "Holy War", which segues a majestic Middle Eastern march into a surprisingly pedestrian Goa trance riff, or "Nocturnal Umbra", which has a few interesting Eastern and orchestral flourishes but relies too heavily on a by-the-numbers techno backbeat.

Other great moments on Crash and Burn! come with the aid of some well-chosen collaborators. "Elixir", the album's closing track, was co-written and produced by Andy Guthrie of Medicine Drum and Banco de Gaia fame, and features his trademark dense, psychedelic sound to great effect, especially over two dark, trippy breakbeat segments. "The Curious Dr. Hump" is an entertaining, albeit brief, romp through horror movie soundtrack territory with Steve Jolliffe of Tangerine Dream, who also contributes some flashy sax and flute to the title track. Another two cuts feature Will White of the Propellerheads, putting his turntable skills to work and injecting an interesting big beat/hip-hop vibe into the proceedings -- more effectively on the loungetronica grooves of "Heaven Scent" than on the cluttered postmodern soundscape of "Dervish Funk".

So many disparate sounds crammed onto one disc could easily become a stylistic jumble, but what ultimately holds Crash and Burn! together is Eat Static's giddy sense of humor. On most of the album's tracks, you can really hear Pepler, Hinton and Everitt having fun with their kitchen-sink approach, interjecting corny embellishments and unexpected sonic collisions at just the right moments -- a hilariously over-the-top guitar solo on "Crash and Burn!", a cheesy cocktail lounge organ amidst the Latin/Cuban congas and trumpets of "Love Truncheon". Even less successful tracks are still highlighted by moments of real cleverness -- check out Will White's witty cartoon soundtrack samples on "Dervish Funk", for example, or the way an "Arabian Nights" vamp on "Holy War" accelerates into an almost spastic self-parody and finally into the lead riff on the track's Goa/techno section. Give Eat Static points for boundless creativity, even when they don't quite hit the mark. Crash and Burn! is about as unique an album as you're likely to hear this year.

Citat :
In The Nude (Mesmobeat, 2001) is another colossus (74-minute) from the duo (actually, more like a quartet now) that has perhaps the most consistent output of all British bands. Crash's new direction has become permanent: the recurring themes are jazz (Salon Hitty) and funk (Temponaut). The crucial tracks are the ones that mix psychedelia, funk and jazz, in particular Our Man In Nirvana. The Relatively Short In The Nude is mostly ambient, and a couple of pieces continue the exploration of surreal atmospheres (Byronic, Moonbeat), but, again, this is mainly an album of funk and jazz applied to dance music.

Citat :
To follow up their bombastic 1995 album Exit Planet Dust, the Chemical Brothers fine-tuned their bombastic beats and produced a rock-solid pop album (pun intended). Dig Your Own Hole finds the common ground between rock & roll and techno, both in spirit and substance. Singles like "Block Rockin' Beats," "Elektrobank," and "Setting Sun" may lack the big hair and pomposity of rock music, but they make up for it in spades, with sampled and real guitars battling for space with sirens and distorted hip-hop drums. The album reeks of pure enthusiasm and energy, evoking a crowd-pleasing exuberance that makes Dig Your Own Hole a Back in Black for the late 1990s. Pure stadium techno.

8 Dr. Sembei (5:35)
9 The Improbable Voyage (5:35)

Citat :
Seb Taylor, probably more well know as Shakta, gives us a full album's worth of his more stripped down, breaks laden creations under the name Digitalis. One of Matsuri's excursions off the beaten psy-path, this album is a must get for fans of the far too short lived psy-breaks movement (ala 21-3 Records, which Digitalis also released on). Fans of Seb Taylor's multitude of projects will also find a lot to like in The Third State.

While there is a strong breaks element in the Digitalis work, like all good albums, the tracks vary widely in vibe, some are slower (No Analysis), others are more straight up breaks (What Else U Got?), others are more straight up (Figments of Reality). All of it drips with Seb Taylor's style. Osho Drums is a particular highlight featuring the drumming of Osho, one half of the excellent, but unknown out of Japan, duo Uni. Figments of Reality has some nice distorted sounds and the most four to the floor track on this album, although very different from a Shakta track. The Funkopath remix of the previous track is, not surprisingly, funky. It builds slowly and evetually kicks in, although not to the extant I wish it would. The Clone Mix of Repeater starts off a little weak, but eventually works into some nice with some nice Taylor distorted lines and eventually developes into a groovy little four/floor stomper.

Overall, this is yet another solid quality release from Matsuri and Seb Taylor. Some of the tracks might be difficult for a pure psy-dj to work into his sets, but for the more creative dj, as well as the general listener, there is plenty of sonic meat to chew on.

Citat :
Joujouka is a collaboration between well-known DJ and producer Tsuioshi Suzuki and legend of Japan techno scene - Takeshi Isogai (also known as Ubar Tmar). Together they created and album that can not be compared with any other. Tribal ethnic percussions, lots of background noises, sudden rhythm changes and psychedelic acid riffs!!! Production is nothing less than perfect - very clear and precise and selection of tracks is pretty well too. Album starts off with "Kibiki", which could be described as preview of what is to come after - simply it contains samples and loops from the other tunes. "Re-psycle frequency" is a well known (New Psychedelic taster/Matsuri) break-trance track - it starts pretty strange, but when the funky bass guitar comes in ...wow! This is really full-on stomper that will rock every dancefloor (not only trancefloor!). After it changes to plain 4/4 it looses some of it's funkiness, but still is great. Then there is "Aoki Uru" - I wonder what it means? - that continues the path shown by 2nd track. It combines fast 4/4 beat with great breakbeat loops and ...hard guitar! I personally don't like guitars in trance but this one changed my mind. It's really well put together, and when the acid line comes in the end of the track you don't need anything more. "Codeine slash" and "Tokio drome" will let you catch your breath, because they are quite calm tracks - the first one could be easily described as drum'n'bass with a female-opera voice (sounds strange, isn't it?) and "tokio drome" is a dark, industrial track with trippy bass-guitar. With "Forgotten communication" we're heading back to the dancefloor - this one reminds me Chemical Brothers because of charakteristic bass and voice-acid (?) that is used at the end. And then there is "Talking drum No Maho" - for me the best track of this album - lots of tribal percussions that are perpetually morphing and changing, electronic twists and noises in the background and - finally - great acid line. Just perfect. The last one - "The right stuff" - is much in the same style, but more on stomping side than tribal. Very hard bass drum keeps the track in order to move your feet, then in about half-way to the end it brakes down - ethnic drums are comming in with a lot of digital effects applied to them and a voice starts counting form 10 to 0! And then is the acid! The best acid line of the whole album - very twisted and furious!!!

Citat :
Debut album from London's "bleep and bass" pioneers, the Hartnoll brothers, collects most of the thumping, home-made tracks that had been tearing up the underground "orbital raves" of London (from which they took their name) for the previous two years on vinyl. Their spine-tingling signature anthem "Chime" is here, along with the moody techno and Star Trek samples of "The Moebius". Meanwhile, "Desert Storm" and"Oolaa" shake and shimmer like dance floor hallucinations. For some listeners these old-school mixes of electro beats, sampler loops, and knob twiddlings will bring on a chemical rush of nostalgia. Others will just want to dance like it's 1991 and marvel at how influential this album obviously was on the vast output of electronica that followed in its wake. From the vocal drowning in the whirlpool of sonic love on "Belfast" to the scintillating grid lines and chill-out ambient gliding of "Midnight", this release proves Orbital was setting trends from the get-go.

Citat :
~The Sixth Sense~
With the vocals of Galliano this soothing introduction track sends you into a space of pure tranquillity. It makes 'Lovely Day' by Bill Withers sound like a hard rock anthem. The vocal synergy from Galliano spoken through rap has a totally hypnotising effect. The sleepy drum and bass and an understated harmonised vocal chorus complete the induced state of serenity with a hint of church bells peeling to close the experience.

~On Est Ensemble Sans Se Parler - L.O.V.E. ~
Set in a Jazz club, you hear the glasses tinkling, the low hum of conversation which is cut subtly by applause at the introduction of the number. Shanshiro's Alto sax gives the musical backbone to the track with again a slow tempo rhythmic backing beat and simple piano accompaniment. Throughout this track ambles spoken French vocals of such a low tone and relaxed slur that you can't help being mesmerized by the absolute beauty of this language. Sampled into this track are the words 'LOVE…Love,' known to me as being part of the soundtrack to Spike Lee's Mo Betta Blues. A short burst of an unexpected brass section set in the style of an early big band 'be-bop' rendition is followed by African style chants before cutting back to the hypnotic french dialogue.
~ Vinyl Junkie ~
An instrumental track set in the style of Trad Jazz with duelling trumpet and sax over an extremely funky bass line and up-tempo drum beat incorporating cow bells, bongo's and a slicing snare. Electric guitar finishes this track with Wah Wah pedal in full flow harmonising against the combative sax and trumpet who are touching on avant garde in that the structure appears less determined than before.

~ Upa Neguinho ~
Now we are off to Spain…or Brazil…no it's both…who cares..it's a party. Latin American salsa tempo with a fantastic sweeping brass section, flamenco style guitar, thumping drums to wake up the neighbours with a mid section solo that most drummers would give their Peavey cymbals to emulate.
~ I'll Bet You Thought I'd Never Find You ~
Who is John Hendricks? I have no idea still today, but his vocals on this funk bop reprise of a transcendent nature keeps your ears glued whatever the costs. Even his whistling solo at the mid section of the track with superb echo effects on the rhythm guitar are beyond fault. Penny whistle solo interludes and a violin that sounds like what you'd hear at the table of a romantic Italian restaurant make this track complete and totally addictive. The subject of the track is also very enticing in that it's a narrative from a man to a lost lover who escaped him. At the beginning of the track you think of him as a stalker…but the man wasn't searching for her…they just met again by chance; Fate, he believes, has brought them together.

~ Poetry And All That Jazz ~
UFO provides Lenny Bruce with the opportunity to cover a Jack Kerouac beat monologue with ghostly piano breaks and a high tempo beat on snare and cow bells. Hardly discernable yet hauntingly vital backing vocals complete the experience. The lyrics on their own stand tall but the backing provides total elevation which defies gravity and explanation.
~ My Foolish Dream ~
Monday Michiru carry's this enchanting number with vocal abilities rarely met by many of her peers. A clear, pitch perfect presentation of a track with accordion (Nugier) and tempo backing that can only remind the listener of France in its most glorious, unabashed sense; A completely uplifting ballad both in musical content and crisp vocals. But it still dangles its feet in the waters of jazz. Superb.

~ Off Road ~
High tempo conclusion to the album with big brass backing, african drum beats, vibrophone solo's and sampled vocal clips from pre-50's matinee classics. A track to dance your rocks off to before "Dawn pushes onto the back of another day."

Conclusion: If you want an introduction to trad. jazz, contemporary jazz, acid jazz, soul, be-bop, salsa, rap, electronica and the blues then UFO ticks all the boxes and some more besides in one great big bag of lush renditions to make you lock the doors, turn the lights out and reach fervently for the REPEAT button.

Citat :
With a thing for vintage spy-thriller themes and ersatz jazz, the international collective United Future Organization has an inherent aura of cool. On 3rd Perspective, its most accomplished release to date, the group has no problem living up to the funk and flair of its forefathers. Moving through soulful vamps and sleek rhythms, the sharply dressed band bashes out the ideal soundtrack for any jet-set daydream. UFO even has their own answer to Shirley Bassey in a woman named Chezere on the 007-ish "Friends." Elsewhere, "Spy Spice (Mon Espionage)" sounds like a lost gem from the Quincy Jones catalog, while "Picaresque Eye" prominently features soothing, exotic percussion and the poetic voice of Skip McDonald. Kitschy but classy.

Citat :
Face it. We live in a world where electronic samples and beats have become part of our everyday music. This "poptronica" revolution has started to envelope our mainstream music industry. It seems most everything released these days is trying to sound "techno."

Behind these attempts at sounding hip are true electronic acts such as Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers, whose increased popularity has made this electronic music chic. But then there is Death in Vegas, a band whose sound is not so easily referenced.

Electronica? Alternative rock? Trance? Trip hop? Just what the hell kind of music is Death in Vegas anyway?

Damn cool - this would be the simplest description. However, this doesn't explain much. Perhaps a better description would be "an aural barrage of psychedelic musings which can induce a trance-like state where nothing matters but ourselves and the musical world we are existing within." Or, perhaps you could take a listen to Death in Vegas's sophomore effort The Contino Sessions and experience it for yourself.

If you are at all familiar with DIV's first release Dead Elvis, your initial response may be one of surprise; the boys have come a long way since then. The new album, recorded in The Contino Rooms, London, marks a leap ahead for the band. Featuring guest vocals by Iggy Pop and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, DIV have released what may be one of the most innovative albums of the year.

"Dirge," the album's opener, greets us with a simple guitar chord progression coupled with a haunting, repetitive chorus of "la la la." An excellent choice for an opener, "Dirge" buildes from this simplicity to an all-out aural extravaganza including a driving bassline and a freaked out keyboard line. The rest of the album expands upon this style, each song a musical rollercoaster, building from simplicity to an intricate beauty.

This album is a superb example of what is possible through the incorporation of rock instrumentation and electronic technology - all without sounding like either. This is music you can just sit back and appreciate. There is no big deep meaning to it, there is no hidden message you have to interpret. It's beauty is inherent.

However, while this album is an artistic expression, it is not meant to be an overly uplifting one. Holmes and Fearless (DIV) are an interesting bunch, and their psychoses come through on this album. With lyrics like "[There are] eggs-bearing insects hatching in my mind" ("Soul Auctioneer") or the simple exclamation "What am I? I'm a murderer" (Iggy Pop on the dark rock track "Aisha"), this album's beauty lies in the complexity of the emotions it exhibits. The instrumentation, even when it is as simple as a church organ set to a simple melody, still extends a foreboding mood. This is an album one can get lost in, and that can be disturbingly wondrous.

This CD really takes you places; like a pleasure cruise across the inner fabric of reality, sound and emotion.I'll never forget shrooming to this album- lets face it, with track names such as LSD or Gama Goblins you can expect something reasonably interesting. It's rare that a remix surpasses the original material. I'd rate this well above any Hallucinogen album, as if gold could in fact be turned into platinum. This features in my list and I try to encourage any music lover into buying the album. There's not a single fault with the quality of this music
